No longer limited to dark shades of gray and black, slate is a perfect choice for flooring and home decor. Once relegated to chalkboards and roofs, slate can be used in any room in the house or even in outdoor applications. Today’s slate tiles are durable and tough, but they are beautiful, too, and come in many colors, patterns, and sizes.
Not Your Mother’s Blackboard
Modern slate tiles come in many rich earth tones, although traditional blacks and grays are also available. Tiles come in shades of sand, desert red, cream and brown, with bold swooshes of color or subtle mottling. The color of the tiles depends upon where in the world the material was quarried. Slate tiles can be honed or tumbled to create a slip-resistant finish, and different sizes and colors of tiles can be pieced together to create beautiful patterns. Slate is not easily damaged and it resists stains to perfection.
Tough but Beautiful
Slate tiles are all-natural, so there is always variation, but they range in thickness from one quarter to three quarters of an inch and are usually cut into 12-inch or 24-inch squares. This thickness makes them very durable and resistant to damage. The dark-colored tiles hide dirt well, although slate is very easy to clean with a damp mop. A dark grout can be used to make dirt less noticeable as well. The color and pattern differences that occur with slate appeal to many people and can give your floor a rustic feel or a sleek, modern appearance.
Can be Used Anywhere
Because it is so durable and easy to care for, slate tile can be used in many different places. It’s a popular choice for kitchen floors and backsplashes, but it can also be used in bathrooms and patios, and is a perfect flooring choice for a sun room. While ceramic tiles heat up when exposed to direct sunlight, slate stays comfortably cool underfoot. But slate can also be used in unusual places, such as on furniture insets or along chair rails. Dark slate makes a wonderful neutral background for mosaics featuring smaller, more colorful tiles.
Natural stone tiles are much heavier than vinyl flooring or hardwood, and therefore require a reinforced subfloor beneath them. Slate is no exception to this rule. Houses built on concrete slabs are perfect candidates for slate tile floors. Your natural slate floor will retain its beauty even in high traffic areas and will not stain, scratch or chip easily once it is installed.
